British Sign Language Relay Assessments

If you request a British Sign Language (BSL) interpreter for your assessment, we will arrange an online assessment using SignVideo’s video relay service and BSL interpreters. The video relay service is free to use.

The assessment will still be carried out by one of our qualified healthcare professionals as normal, but they will communicate with you via the video BSL interpreter. At the end of the assessment, the healthcare professional and SignVideo will end the session.

How to join your SignVideo assessment

To use the SignVideo service, please follow these instructions carefully.

Before your assessment, find a quiet spot where you will not be disturbed and make sure you have:

  1. A suitable device which is fully charged – desktop computer, laptop, tablet, or mobile phone with a front-facing camera. Please make sure your device is either fully charged or plugged in.
  2. An up-to-date browser – to connect to SignVideo please use one of the following browsers:
  • Firefox, Internet Explorer or Google Chrome for Windows,
  • Safari for Mac
  1. A webcam – this can be plugged in or built in
  2. A strong internet connection – SignVideo advise having a minimum of 2Mbps upload and download internet speed. Your internet connection can be any of the following:
  • 3G, 4G, 5G mobile network
  • Plug in broadband/ ethernet
  • At the time of your assessment, please visit https://ingeus.signvideo.net to connect to SignVideo. Tell them you are calling Ingeus for your Personal Independence Payment assessment. SignVideo will then connect you to our Healthcare Professional.
  • If you need help connecting to the service, please contact us.
  • It is important you start your assessment on time so please follow these steps carefully to make sure you are ready.

If you need a companion at your assessment

If you have a companion attending your assessment too, they must follow these instructions carefully. These instructions can also be found in your appointment letter.

Instructions for companions joining by video

  • Download the SignVideo app on any device that has a camera. Your companion can download the app from either Google Play or iOS. If they are using a laptop or computer, please visit https://www.signvideo.co.uk/downloads/ and follow the download guidance.
  • When the app is installed, your companion will need to sign in using the following username and password:

Username: companion1
Password: companion1

  • It is important they follow these steps in advance so that they are ready to sign in before the assessment begins.

Instructions for joining by telephone

If your companion is joining by telephone call only, please provide the healthcare professional with your companion’s telephone number at the beginning of the assessment. Your companion will need to be ready to answer the phone at the time of your appointment.
