About this centre

Our Colchester assessment centre is located on Wellington Street inside Crown Office Buildings, a large building which also houses Jobcentre Plus. The assessment centre is easily accessible by public transport and is a short distance from Colchester town centre. There is no dedicated car park, please see parking info below for further details. The main entrance will be clearly signposted with an Assessment Centre sign.

Assessments carried out at this centre:

  • Work Capability Assessments for people claiming Universal Credit (UC) and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Other assessments for people claiming Specialist Benefits including Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) or Veterans UK

Travelling by bus or coach

Buses run frequently to the town centre from Colchester station and from most surrounding areas. The stops closest to the assessment centre are in Head Street and St. John’s Street. Colchester bus and coach station is off Queen Street, approximately one mile from the assessment centre.

Travelling by train

The nearest station, Colchester Town, is served by Abellio Greater Anglia trains and is approximately 10-15 minutes walk from the Assessment Centre. The mainline Colchester station, also served by Abellio Greater Anglia trains, is approximately 1½ miles away. Alternatively, a number of bus routes run from Colchester station lay-by (usually stop F) to the High Street in the town centre.

Travelling by car

From Colchester town centre turn off at the large roundabout by the police station into Maldon Road (B1022) towards Tiptree, then take the second road on the left (Beaconsfield Avenue/B1026). At the end of the road turn left into Butt Road (B1026) then next right into Wellington Street.

Car parking

Please note: the on-street parking bays in Wellington Street are for residents only. The nearest public car park is the St. John’s multi-storey car park off the A134 Southway. Alternatively, the Butt Road car park is located a short distance away off the B1026.

When you arrive

Remember to bring your identification and appointment letter with you.

The entrance to the assessment centre is on Wellington Street. Press the intercom button on arrival. When the door is released remotely, it will open automatically. If you are a wheelchair user, please note that there is a step of approximately 5 inches from the pavement to the door threshold; if you are unable to negotiate the step without assistance, please use the intercom to notify a member of staff.
